OU/AU/CRAU/OC: OU
Age: 17

World Information: Game setting, synopsis and history
Personal History: Handy dandy wiki page!
Personality:
Cheerful, sociable, impulsive, moody, and naive, Tidus is on the surface -- and most of the way in, really -- no different from any other 17 year old big into sports. Hailing from a city of high technology and little strife, he never had to consider more than his own problems, his dreams of becoming the biggest Blitzball player of his day and the next big game. It makes him more sheltered than other individuals, though the events of his game have given him a bigger view of the world (that is, any). Still, his experiences are limited, and not due to a disinterest to the world at large.

Simply, those from his city--a city dreamed by beings known as the Fayth--weren't allowed to dream of a world outside of their own.

Regardless, Tidus is an optimistic character: a glass half full before empty, and we'll get more drinks if we want to! While not immune to doubt, he'll attempt to make the best out of any situation he can. We see this when he arrives in Spira, to him an unknown world, with everyone thinking his home destroyed a thousand years ago and himself crazy via exposure to toxins, and decides he'll find how to get by and get back, however he can. He doesn't shy from trying new things or putting himself in danger, hardly having used a sword for more than a day or so before he's off following a group and joining in their battles, despite how rare fiends were where he came from.

Suffice to say, a challenge isn't going to make him freeze up. But Tidus wasn't always this way: we see when he was younger that Tidus was a sullen child, distant from his father and distrustful of those not his mother. This stemmed from a poor relationship with his father, whose arrogant persona and means of child-rearing -- to put down his child, as a way of inspiring him -- created a rift between the two. Yet it was this same memory of his father -- someone who would discourage others, and only think of himself -- that also inspired Tidus's approach with others as he grew up. His father was a bully, so Tidus does his best to encourage others; his father told him 'you can't do it', and so he does his best to disprove that, while also telling others 'you can!'

Wakka, after seeing Tidus pull off his father's signature move: "Whoa! What's that called?"

Tidus: "Doesn't have a name. Anyone can do it if they try."

His positive personality can make him sound arrogant at times, yet his boasts will rarely, if ever, be at the expense of others. It's with others that Tidus can shine, if by his fans or by working in a team. He basks in positive reinforcement, becoming lively and active in a group than he ever would alone--all it takes is a compliment over his new sword skills for Tidus to admit he started 'seriously considering' becoming a guardian.

Tidus is a guy who can appreciate the perks of teamwork, of supporting one another and being able to put your heads together to figure out a way forward. And really, unless what they're putting their heads together for is Blitzball, Tidus needs others: his smarts only extend as far as his ball game, and whether he remembers something or other he heard about is as reliable as any of our memories.

That isn't to say Tidus is extraordinarily stupid, but simply put, he's naive, unwilling to make outrageous assumptions unless he's got a reason to believe in them. For two examples, Tidus figures that one of his companions, Auron, is an Unsent: a dead spirit still present amongst the living. He figures this out when it's more than implied during a visit by those who can tell these things, and by later seeing the man being attacked in a memory. On the other hand, Tidus never made the assumption that another companion, Yuna, a summoner journeying so she can defeat Sin, would be killed by her same goal -- simply because he couldn't believe that the people who grew up with her would allow her to kill herself.

Tidus: "Lulu! How could you? How could you? Isn't she like a sister to you?
I thought you were family! Why don't you do something, Wakka?"

Lulu: "Don't you think we tried to stop her? She follows...her heart."

At times, he's also willing to play ignorant about truths, or just not to question them too deeply when he doesn't know what to do with the information: such as finding out that his father has become 'Sin', a giant fiend that constantly kills and destroys. He repeatedly tells Auron that he doesn't believe him about this reveal, despite his thoughts often showing otherwise. And his actions more so, when the next time he's confronted with Sin, he goes swimming after him--literally. (Note: This is Sin.)

'Maybe I was angry. Maybe I wanted to go home.
I kept thinking of Zanarkand, and my old man.'

You could say he's got a lot of feelings when it comes to his dad.

But when all is said and done, and he's washed up on shore with no dads to chase after, all Tidus is left to do is to keep going, do something--because Tidus is a guy who can't stand to be idle. Sure, he'll get tired of walking, walking, walking, doing the same thing over and over, of battle after battle; but he's someone who needs some kind of goal, some purpose, if just to keep him entertained or to distract an overthinking mind. This is much what he does soon after arriving in Spira, and accepting the invitation to join a Blitzball team. He's been there for five seconds, knows nothing about the world, what's going on; but Blitzball is familiar, it's safe, and what else is he going to do?

There's no use worrying or wondering--or so it's good to tell yourself, sometimes. Try and make the lie real.

'No more worrying about where, or when, I was.
Sure it was hard not to think of home. But I started to feel better already.
    A little better...maybe.'

The same occurs in a side mobile game, Mobius, set after FFX. Taken to another new world and knowing he'll never be able to return to his own, Tidus throws himself into becoming a 'Warrior of Light', a saviour in the land he's found himself in, and works himself endlessly in his hopes of achieving this goal. Knowing he won't be able to return home and with nothing of his past he can salvage, it's not simply about looking forward, but needing a distraction, a purpose. Without it, Tidus becomes despondent, and his uncertainties will begin to show through the cracks.

Because despite his sunshine personality, he's not happy-go-lucky no matter what. Tidus can be moody, grumble about what's unfair and what's dull just like the rest of us, and he can be silly and impulsive: swiping binoculars from strangers, being loud over a megaphone to tell another Blitzball team they're going down when swept up in the need to tell them what for. He's silly and and sometimes dramatic, creeped out by the concept of ghosts, bargaining with fires to not go out; he jogs on the spot in his haste and panic, and even more sensible goofy moves.

Tidus: "They say Seymour went to Macarena Temple."

    Wakka: "Macalania Temple."

    Tidus: "Aye."

At the same time, Tidus can be considerate. While he's not opposed to sticking his nose into trouble, he knows when to back off when it comes to an individual's personal problems; refusing to comment on the bitter spat between Lulu and Wakka early on, though he does try to comment amicably on the situation later--and knows to shut his mouth when warned.

    Lulu: "Not the most...graceful win.
If it was Chappu, he'd still be standing."

Tidus: "Hey, aren't you being just a little unfair?"

    Lulu: "Excuse me?"

Tidus: "I know I could never take Chappu's place. You're the one who told Wakka that, right, Lulu?
And I don't think Wakka would ever try to take Chappu's pl--"

Lulu: "You don't want to finish that sentence."

Tidus's mouth isn't always the most refined tool he's got, but when it comes to picking fights, Tidus can show restraint. Against Wakka's racism towards a group of people known as the 'Al Bhed', he'll usually be the one to dismiss his grumblings and cut them short, so the actual Al Bhed in the group don't have to hear it. He's also the cheerleader on Kimahri's side, an individual who's usually met whim with a gruff silence. When Kimahri is being bullied by those of his clan (the Ronso), Tidus suggests the brilliant advice of 'Take 'em on!' in a bar; and later, offers to fight by the Ronso's side against the others, in support.

...maybe picking fights in bars isn't the greatest restraint, but sometimes, what else are you going to do? While Tidus has moments of consideration, he can still be rowdy and defensive, the kind of guy to say, 'What's it to you?' to someone or something he doesn't like. He'll speak up to help someone, but that's not to say he'll know the right thing to say. Sometimes, he'll have no words to give, can be lost himself, and act on impulse--going as far one time to kiss Yuna while she was crying, her whole belief system revealed to be a sham, and knowing she can do nothing more than continue as a summoner. It's an action that comes from a place of true affection from Tidus, his interest for her growing from thinking she's cute to more as they came to better understand each other. But truly, out of a desire to comfort her, and to be there for her.

'We escaped with our skins intact, but Yuna lost something. I could already tell, her faith was shaken. Yevon had betrayed her.
I felt like I should do or say something -- anything... But nothing came.
I was just as lost as she was.'

Still might be an odd choice to make though, in the middle of a lake.

But it can't be forgotten that in the end, Tidus is young, rather immature, and with a lot of room to grow. His time during the events of Final Fantasy X helped him to mature into being someone reliable, and in a more meaningful way outside of sports or small gestures. It gave him a taste of the real world, of true living; showing him that it can be cruel and harsh compared to the life he lived. But this was just a taste, and a few months can't change a person entirely.

Nevertheless, Tidus will do his best to help others, and will persevere despite all odds, no matter how immature or unreasonable his goals may seem. He's learned love and forgiveness, and also how to carry the weight of knowing the end of your life will come for the greater good--putting himself aside so those that have been dreaming for too long can finally rest.

Key themes: Discovery (of the world, of themselves; who he is and what he is, the truth of the world), belief (in others, in goals; in doing what you believe is right despite the difficulties), and familial ties (their impact on oneself, difficult relationships and dealing with them, old hurt, responsibility and love)

Main Motivation: To always give a 110% in your goals. To push through life despite personal hardships and failures, and to never stay down. To do what's right.

Likely, his motivation on the train will be to make the best of it, and hope he can help others. He won't believe he can return home, and doing so will just mean death for him, soooo!! But he'll happily help others in their efforts.

Skills:
    - Athletic; Tidus has a body of an athlete, meaning he has great stamina, can swim, and has strength to go with it.

    - Fighter; He has skills with a sword and can use stored energy to unleash special attacks called Overdrives, with his specifically labelled under Swordplay. Likely, given his time with a sword is as long as the story of the game, he can adapt these skills into other weapons, but it would take time and effort to do so. His speed and reflexes are his strong points.

    - Magic/Skills; While not an expert at magic, Tidus has some proficiency with time-based magic specifically, being capable of slowing down opponents and speeding up allies, as well as applying these abilities into physical assaults as well: such as a Delay Attack, and Quick Hit.

He also knows some light healing spells, as well as elemental, though it's fairly basic in strength. (However, his affinity with water does make his water-based spells stronger)

    Actual list:
    - Underwater; While the 'magic' of his world helps people to breathe easier in general, Tidus can hold his breath and endure physical attacks while underwater, as well as battle. There will be limits to how long he can hold out, but he can still be reliable to an extent.

He's also really good at dodging thunderbolts.

Item: His necklace with the Zanarkand Abes logo on it.

Sample:
Notes: So in canon, Tidus is connected to beings called the Fayth that at the end of the game pass on, meaning that Tidus disappears -- as they're his anchor to existing (as he's a dream, and they're the dreamers). Will he have something on his person that would help anchor/keep him around?
