[ Don't worry Inigo, the shoulder higgledies are trying to pap your cheeks to help you cool down!!
But ohhh, the women are all dancers in Inigo's world? That makes more sense now, and he nods. He knows he shouldn't tease him too much about that, and not that he wants to, but Tidus can't help the smile that blooms across his face. ]
Well, women can't have all the fun, huh? [ And again, more hushed (and if with a playful edge)-- ] You should show me some of your moves sometime.
[ It'd sound like flirting from anyone else - especially with the following wink. ]
[ It's a good thing his face was already red, even with the tiny water beings on his face doing their very best to try and cool down said face. Because that statement, followed by that wink, would have done the job otherwise.
For so, so many reasons. ]
Y.. You want to see?! But I.. I'm really not that good! [ He shakes his head (though gently, he doesn't want to accidentally shake off even a single higgledy!), looking like he's about to start sweating. Jumblie even starts hig!-ing a little at him in concern. ] It's nothing that special. I don't want to disappoint you!
How can you disappoint me? I don't know anything about dancing. [ And with the water higgledies being clued into Tidus's intentions, they jump off from Inigo's bodies, tiny squeaks as they get excited. A few fall on their face.
But Tidus is standing, up onto his feet. ]
I wanna see how you move! Is it a dance you do on your own? How about with me? [ Or he meant, 'with a partner', but that's just where his mouth took him. He rolls a hand however, as his mind works for further great ideas. ] Oh, let's see if the music car's free, the upstairs! We can pick some music!
[ It's hard to think. Because half of his brain is already busy with the many questions Tidus is asking him, but the other half is still on high alert at the thought of dancing in front of anyone. Especially when he hasn't been able to practice in so long, and.. well, it's not like Tidus of all people would judge him, but still!
It's a struggle. But what makes Inigo - in the end - unable to just back out and run away is the fact that Tidus has been so kind today, listening to Inigo talk. Trying to comfort him. Maybe he owes Tidus this bit of trust.
Jumblie jumps off Inigo too, cheering him on as she goes. He can do it! ]
Y-Yes, the music car might be better. I can dance without music, but it's a bit more awkward.. [ Especially when his heart is already pounding in his chest with anxiety during a first demonstration.
But he's determined to go through with it. Which means he's getting up too, already starting to head for the door. ]
And I can do both. Dancing on my own or with a partner, I mean. So, um.. depending on what you'd like, either is fine.. You don't have to worry if you're not used to dancing but want to dance with me, I can lead.
[ Tidus claps him on the back of the shoulders as he stands, Gibbers morphed once more into a singular form and skipping on ahead for the door, even more eager than the both of them, apparently. ]
You mean like a slow dance? I've seen that - easy! I can do that no problem! Alright, I'll help you get off the rust and pick some music with you. Don't worry, [ but why would inigo be anyway, ] I know the kind you need with that. All slow. Piano, violins...!
[ See? He's not just a dumb guy. But as the pair of them are walking, and figuring the question won't be too revealing as they past by anyone, Tidus asks, still interested- ]
So- do guys just not dance at all? Is there any special significance to it? Or is it just, women mostly do it, they're the people everyone likes to watch?
[ Usually Inigo may have told him that it's not exactly as easy as Tidus thinks it may be.. but right now, he's definitely willing to cut the other a lot of slack. Practically infinite slack. Especially when Tidus is being so sweet - so happy, enthusiastic, supportive. ]
Mostly the latter. [ He instead answers as they walk, Jumblie trailing right behind them, managing to keep up pretty well. ] Most people think it's strange to look at male dancers instead. Especially since there are a lot of men out there who prefer to look at dancers, as.. um..
[ He's humming in understanding, exactly like a guy who knows what Inigo means. And that's giving him an idea on what kind of dancing this is (definitely not the slow, piano and violins type, right?). ]
Well I bet there's guys and gals who'd be up for looking at a guy like that, hey? [ hint hint wink wink nudge nudge and all. ] S'not like the ladies don't like some skin to look at.
[ Which used to make him shy, but- you get used to it! You gotta act as big as they see you!!
But they've come into the corridor of the music car, the doors leading into the bottom floor where instruments sit spread out. Up above is where they have the stage, more suited for concerts than practising one's music.
[ Inigo may or may not be thinking about all the times he's failed with girls. And the fact that he doesn't know a single guy back home who is also into guys. And the fact that oh Naga, people would be looking at him while dancing, he feels like he's going to die--
Which is why he quickly focuses on heading up to the upper level of the carriage instead before his brain can work up a panic spiral big enough to convince him to go back on this whole idea. Of even just showing Tidus. Because he wants to go through with it, even though it's mortifying. ]
I don't know. Usually when I hear people talk about male dancers, they're just making fun of the concept. So I've never told anyone about this before.
[ Not voluntarily, anyway. Why do some people enjoy sneaking up to him at night, huh? ]
S--So that's just how much I trust you, alright! Don't take it for granted! [ Is Inigo tsunning a little?
How the tables have turned. Embarrassment can do some stuff to a guy, apparently.. ]
[ Probably the only, but surely not for the rest of Inigo's life. He'll need to work on his confidence as much as his moves though.
But Tidus wants to be supportive, as interested as he is about this dancing on its own. He goes to the wall terminal for the tunes by the carriage stage, clicking through to find what they need. Let's see... ]
So this is the kind of dance that men like to watch women do... [ So...
What comes under dance? ...
Let's put onto this, and Tidus looks over his shoulder. ]
But then it turns into a genuine frown as he shakes his head. No good. ]
I mean, if it's my first time dancing in front of you, I don't want to do it to this.. otherwordly music. [ Not that it's necessarily bad. Inigo is starting to get a bit more used to the modern sound, at least, but-- ] I'm not sure I can find the right beat to it.
[ And although he's pretty sure he's going to look like a fool performing anyway, he'd rather at least look like slightly less of a ridiculous fool.
Inigo moves over to the terminal, taking a look at it himself. Browsing some of the songs, mouthing silent 'no's and shaking his head..
Until he reaches one that he lets run for a little longer, a mix of something modern with something a bit more traditional, humming along as he seems to think. ]
.. I think I can make this one work.. I'll be improvising though, so don't hold it against me!
[ Well, this tune is completely different -- even the opposite -- of where Tidus wanted to initially take the music. But hey, now he's got a better idea!
But with music finally picked and Tidus not needing to keep standing, Tidus takes to one of the seats giddily, plopping on down and leaning forward, leg crossed. ]
This is a judgment-free zone! [ But, Inigo will not be free of this devilish grin painted on Tidus's face. ]
[ He lets out a Sound at that. It's mostly a whine, really, like the kind of sound little kids make when they have to go to the doctor and they really don't want to. Sure, it's kind of flattering that Tidus is seemingly so giddy about getting to see him dance, but.. it's also so embarrassing. And worse, what if he doesn't like it? Ugh.
It's why Inigo still awkwardly stands there for a moment, fully trying to work up the courage to do this. He rubs the back of his neck as he makes his way up to the small stage. ]
[ Not that he doesn't cry regularly, but.. you know. Worse than usually.
But after sucking in a deep breath, Inigo knows he just has to do this. Has to put himself over this. Just pretend Tidus isn't there. Pretend you're dancing like back home, during a very rare quiet moment at night..
He tries to zone out his brain as much as possible. Don't think. Just move.
Inigo presses the play button for the music, focusing on a point somewhere above Tidus's head, and he dances.
With real skill. Smoothly. It has a kind of confidence to it that Inigo rarely seems to display - or maybe rather than confidence, it's a lack of the insecurity that usually troubles him. It makes him look so much more free without it.
None, really. It's fun the way people can synchronise in dancing, and some compare the moves display in blitzball like a dance. There's an art to it, for sure: making your own signature move that's recognisable, that's as eye-catching to the audience as it is a problem for the other team.
But--but he really can't compare to what Inigo does here and now to blitzball. Though his limbs move with a grace as one in water, fluid, easily; and to Inigo's credit, he has Tidus watching for more reason than the grace of a friend. Taking note of the music, having an ear for knowing where it's going. Because this wasn't a piece he knew already, was it?
Whatever Inigo gets up into the music room already without Tidus, he'll have to investigate! But as the music ends, the dance with it, there's a moment to allow for the room to settle, Inigo's energy. And then--
he whistles. Long, drawn out, then singing in a ribbon, the note finally turning into a proper catcall as he takes away his fingers and starts clapping. ]
Heeyyyy, Inigo! What was that! You don't practice? No way! You just have those moves in ya? Hey, encore, encore!
[ Coming back down from his dancing high to regular Inigo levels - because honestly, even though it feels embarrassing to admit to himself by now, it felt good to be able to full on dance again like that, practically elating - he can feel his face start to grow very, very pink as Tidus's reaction dawns upon him. He has to resist shoving his hands in front of his face in the most childish possible attempt to hide.
But it's not all bad. Honestly, it's.. it's nice to be praised, especially for something he loves, but at the same time he has absolutely zero ideas on how to deal with it. ]
W--Well, not on the train! [ He may have tried to sneak in a few moments of practice on specific missions where he was able to have some privacy, but really, even that hasn't been much. ] I.. I, uh, I used to practice back home.. sometimes.. but it's been a while, and that most likely made me look super rusty, and, and--!
[ He's just nervously rambling now.
Trying to get the nervous energy in him to calm down, Inigo quickly sits down to feel a little less ridiculous. ]
No! [ His reply is quick, incredibly earnest. ] You were in the zone, enjoying yourself! It was great to watch! You should do this a lot more!
[ And he looks around, brings out his hands to motion to the room. ]
No one comes up here ever. It's the perfect spot for practice! [ Well, he doesn't really know that, but- ] You have music and you have space... hey, why don't you speak some tunes even and you can think up dances or whatever. Right? Like some moves!
[ It's all still a little overwhelming. Inigo nervously pulls a hand through his hair, trying to come to terms with the fact that someone likes his dancing. And that said someone is also a person whose opinion is pretty important to Inigo, on top of it all.
He's so lost in the thought that he's pretty sure he misses some words in the middle there, only glancing back at Tidus at those last few words. ]
Huh? Uh.. Yes, I can think up dances, but.. are you really sure no one is going to come up here? I really don't want anyone on the train to see this.
[ Especially not some specific people. LOOKING AT YOU, RENO. ]
Well... [ He's thinking, giving a look around the room. Really, it's like a miniature stage hall, no matter how many times he looks. ]
All the instruments are downstairs, right? And the music libraries. So why would you come up here unless you wanted to practice some music and you didn't wanna bug someone already downstairs?
[ Oh- ] Me and Taiki could come up here with you. How 'bout that? When we hang out.
[ A little embarrassing too, still. Not that he wouldn't trust both of them with his life. And Taiki even knows about this secret too - though he mentioned it so casually in passing that he thinks the other may not even understand just how important it is to him.
But they both know. And they're both kind. They won't make fun of him.
So Inigo slowly nods, looking surprisingly vulnerable. ]
.. okay. I really trust both of you. So I-- I'd like that, if you guys wouldn't mind.
I know Taiki would want to support you, [ Tidus says sincerely - because he wants Inigo to hear it, and be assured. ] --And so do I. If you can feel comfortable for a while, and have us here to support you if anyone does come up? You should.
Taiki likes to draw - [ and he looks around- ] so he can find a space in here to practice drawing. And I can dooo...
Something? [ A laugh, and he raises a hand. ] Okay, I'll think something for me. Meditating, whatever. But we'll make it work.
[ There's very little to doubt about those words. If Taiki and Tidus have shown him anything, it's that they'd support anything he does. ]
I would feel comfortable with you guys. Or.. well, more than I would with anyone else. [ Since he'll still have to get used to the idea of dancing in front of anyone. But the idea of it being them sure is less scary than anyone else on the train.
Though he extends an arm to gently - very, very gently - shove Tidus. Just a bit. ]
You need to find something you'd like to do too though, alright? [ This is the problem with Tidus mostly being into more active things that require more space! ] I'd feel bad if you were just wasting time here for my sake.
Wasting time, hanging out with my favourite guys? [ A pinch of a grin, but he gets it, he gets it! ] I will, don't worry. My mind's just blanking right now! But I have plenty I like to do.
[ And stuff that requires sitting around? ...
...
... well he could make a hundred folded paper flowers, right..... ]
.. and how many of those things don't involve you running all over the place?
[ It's a tease, sure, but it's a very gentle one. And at the very least it makes Inigo smile a bit again as he looks at his friend. ]
I mean, if you can't think of anything else, you could help me with the music. I want to be able to dance to all sorts of music, but most of it in the music library here is a bit.. [ .. VAGUE HAND GESTURE.. ] Maybe you can help me figure out ones that are a bit more like the one I just danced to so I can gradually grow into it?
[ Tidus is the one often listening to music here, after all. ]
[ IS THIS A CALL OUT, INIGO. Because Tidus is trying to think ... ... ... he likes videogames, but those are in the games car!!
But oh, music help? ] I can do that, sure! But I could help you with it now. [ Here, let him get up. ] There's a labelling system, see? You can find music by the same band name or what genre it is.
[ He's gone over to the wall terminal they were at before to pick the music, tapping at it, and... ]
See? There's more tracks here by the same group.
[ He doesn't mind looking further into it, but if he can help Inigo help himself too. He's stood to give room for Inigo to look at the screen with him, guide him and point out- ]
This is the artist name - and then these are the genres connected to it.
Though he sure didn't expect Tidus to solve this problem so quickly. Then again, Inigo hardly even knows how to get these things to play music, let alone know how to browse a music library.. He looks half-puzzled as he first glances along over Tidus's shoulder and then looks at the screen proper when the other steps aside. ]
Geez, I suggest a friendship activity, and you immediately turn it into an explanation. [ It's still light though, still joking. He still appreciates the help! ] You're sure it won't accidentally start playing something utterly terrifying if I look at the connected genres?
[ MODERN MACHINERY IS WEIRD AND CAN'T FULLY BE TRUSTED, OKAY. ]
I can't promise the music's all quality on this. But that's the risk you play with when it comes to a music library! One person's ear eel is another person's blobfish.
[ Fish jokes! You gotta love them!! ]
But you know, people dance to other music too. So something like...
